Black History Steering Committee

Organized to provide guidance and community perspective, the Black History Steering Committee is comprised of community leaders from a diverse backgrounds of Black history and culture. The committee works to ensure that the city's celebration of Black History is inclusive, accurate and meaningful. 

With a mission to promote understanding and appreciation of the contributions and experiences of Black individuals and communities throughout the history of Greenville, the City will highlight ongoing community efforts and initiatives. Through the committee's guidance and recommendations, together we will create a Black History Month celebration that truly reflects the diverse and rich history of the community. The committee operates under 3 tenets: Honor the Past, Look to the Future and Build Community.

PAMELA ADAMS

A US Navy veteran and interior design professional dedicated to being involved in the betterment of her community. She holds a current seat on the City Planning Commission, volunteers with local organizations and is vocal on important issues to be a catalyst for change.

Peggy Baxter

The immediate past chair of Habitat for Humanity Greenville Board of Directors and a retired Vice President for Community Health and Ambulatory Services at the Children's Hospital Research and Medical Center of Oakland. She is a dedicated community leader who has served in various leadership positions for community organizations and is currently a deacon at Long Branch Baptist Church.

Karen Baynes-Dunning

A former juvenile court judge has dedicated her career to improving the quality of life for children, youth, and families. She has served in numerous leadership positions in the public and nonprofit sectors to improve public policies and services that affect communities.

Jeanette Brewster

An embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit. She is a long-time Greenvillian who has served as a major cornerstone in the small business and startup ecosystem. She is passionate about creating economic opportunities through entrepreneurship.

George Davis 

George has a diverse background that spans 20 years of leadership in higher education, public media and community relations. He currently serves as the Director of Community Engagement & Impact at the Peace Center. He leads efforts to create more inclusive programming by partnering with community leaders and organizations to engage culture, amplify voices and educate and inspire through the arts.

Glenis Redmond

A multi-talented artist, poet, and teacher artist who is also known as an "imagination activist." She uplifts culture and community with her words and art and has presented her poetry worldwide. She currently serves as the Poet Laurette of Greenville.

Travis Wharton

Travis has dedicated his career to education and economic mobility. He has led initiatives to help stifle generational poverty and increase opportunities for communities to reach economic and social stability through his previous roles as Education Coordinator for the Urban League of the Upstate and Director of Education and Economic Mobility at the United Way of Greenville County. He now serves as the Community Investments Officer at Hollingsworth Funds.
