Earlier today we received a call from a credit union in Chester County about a possible scam involving an elderly female. The victim went to the credit union to withdraw $8,000 after she received a call from a “Sgt. Peterson of the Greenville Police Department” indicating a family member was being held on bond in Greenville. The “officer” indicated that he would retrieve the money from her home after she withdrew the funds. The Chester County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating.
It is important to speak to the process of someone being held on bond at the Greenville County Detention Center. An officer/representative from the police department would not collect money in any way for someone being held at the detention center. Instead, bond money is collected only in person at the detention center in front of the Administrative Recorder that is on duty at the time.
The Greenville Police Department does not have a “Sgt. Peterson” employed at this time. Anyone that receives a call like the one described is asked to call their local law enforcement office immediately.
