Affordable Housing Strategy Update 

Since our last update, the Affordable Housing Working Group has continued its efforts to implement the recommendations in the “Balancing Prosperity and Affordable Housing in Greenville” report. The September meeting summary is available on the Affordable Housing Section of our website.

The Affordable Housing Working Group will present draft recommendations during the October 16 City Council Work Session. The work session begins at 4 p.m. in the 9th floor conference room of City Hall (206 S Main Street).

2016-2017 Program Year Accomplishments

Each year, the Community Development Division publishes a Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER), which examines Community Development’s activities compared to the goals and priorities set in its 2016-2017 Annual Action Plan. A draft of the CAPER is currently available at the Community Development office on the 5th floor of City Hall and at the Hughes Main Library in the South Carolina Room.

The CAPER also highlights the division’s accomplishments from the 2016-2017 program year, which include 14 properties acquired, 17 structures demolished, 9 housing units constructed and 21 homes rehabilitated. Additionally, 178 students were served in the afterschool tutorial program, 156 families were assisted with fair housing counseling and 159 new families were assisted in the KEY Homeownership Counseling program. For more information call 467-4570.

Historic Resources Survey

In early May, the City kicked off a 6-month study to update Greenville’s historic resources. Focusing on the West End, Village of West Greenville, Greater Sullivan, Cleveland Park, Nicholtown, North Main, Augusta Road, Sherwood Forest and Parkins Mill Road areas, our consultant, WLA Studio, toured the areas searching for structures built between 1945 and 1975 and those properties that were not a part of previous studies completed in 1983 and 2003.

We also encouraged citizens to participate by submitting information about their own property, properties in their neighborhood or in the city using an interactive map and completing a short form at City staff will continue to accept suggestions from the interactive map.

Please join representatives of WLA Studio and City staff to hear about the properties and areas identified during the research. The 2017 Historic Resources Survey Final Report will be presented on Tuesday, November 14, at 6 p.m. at the Sears Recreation Center in McPherson Park, 100 E.
